Most steel fabricators are not certified to build fracture critical members. A fracture critical member is one whose failure would collapse the structure, which is why bridge owners restrict that work to fabricators audited specifically for it.
Holding AISC Fracture Critical and Bridge Fabricator, Advanced means our shop has been audited for the welding procedures, non-destructive testing, traceability and documentation those members require. If your project includes bridge steel, this is the certification that decides who is allowed to bid.
Our fabrication facility covers 700,000 square feet of enclosed space across 88 acres and is served directly by the Rochester and Southern short line railroad.
Rail access is the detail most fabricators cannot match. A girder that would need to be spliced to travel by road can ship whole by rail, which removes field splices, field welding and the inspection those splices attract. On long-span bridge and industrial work, that changes both the schedule and the cost.
Fabrication runs on a PythonX CNC plasma cutting system, a Ficep Gemini plate processor, Ficep Gemini HPE, CNC tube benders, and sub arc and automated welders. Automated welding is what holds quality consistent across a large tonnage package.
A fabricator who does not erect hands you a coordination problem at the loading dock. We field more than 350 employees, including AISC and AWS certified welders and fabricators, NACE certified painters and blasters, and licensed, NCCCO trained crane operators and riggers.
When the same company fabricates, coats, ships and sets the steel, a dimensional error is caught and corrected inside one organisation. It also means shop coating is specified against how the member will actually be handled and erected, rather than guessed at.
Structural steel work runs alongside our mechanical and pipe spool fabrication scopes across oil and gas, power generation and data centers, water infrastructure and bridge work. On projects that need both steel and process piping, one contractor carrying both removes the interface where most schedule disputes start.
Bridge steel fabrication is a separate discipline from building steel, and the gap is documentation. Every plate is traceable to its mill certificate, welds follow AWS D1.5 rather than D1.1, non-destructive testing is scheduled rather than sampled, and the whole package is auditable long after erection.
Our DOT certifications in New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts exist because each state audits a fabricator separately before allowing bridge work. Combined with AISC Fracture Critical, that is what lets us quote fracture critical members rather than only the approach spans around them.
Are you AISC certified, and to which category? Plain AISC certification and Fracture Critical are not the same audit. Ask which one.
Can you erect what you fabricate? If not, you are buying two contracts and owning the gap between them.
How does the steel leave your shop? Truck-only fabricators splice long members. Ask what that adds in field welds.
LMC has over 350 employees which include; API 1104, ASME, AISC & AWS certified welders and fabricators, NACE painters & blasters, licensed & NCCCO Trained crane operators & riggers, millwrights & carpenters, HVAC service group, engineering and locomotive employees.
